Biodegradable and edible materials for meat industry, products of major importance in implementing the concept of green economy

Objectives

The project aims to produce edible natural packaging made of biopolymers, used for the replacement of polyethylene sheets, those of cellulose coated with polyethylene, of the multilayer packages that usually contain a metal foil.

The purpose of the project is the development of two categories of packaging materials for meat products. One category is biodegradable and edible packaging, and the other category is a packaging material, completely biodegradable in a short time.

The packages that will be obtained in the project will be represented by edible foils for the cover film and biodegradable materials for the tray that supports the products. Biopolymers such as alginates, agar and starch, and glycerol as a plasticizer, in well- known proportions from previous studies conducted by the research team, will be used to make the edible packaging. These materials will be improved by the addition of meat-specific ingredients.

The biodegradable materials, which will form the basis of the trays used for the portioned packing of the meat preparations, will be obtained from the shells of the different oil seeds that remain after the oil extraction.

Project specific objectives are:

1. Practical realization of the invention proposals, published in BOPI, which aims to test the biodegradable and edible materials by the action of aqueous and heated liquids.
2. Researches to establish the optimal solutions for the development of two categories of new packaging materials for meat products, respectively edible packaging and biodegradable packaging in the short term.
3. Making edible packaging for semi-dried meat products.
4. Making biodegradable packaging for support trays for meat products of small weight.
5. Making edible or biodegradable packaging for the foil on top of the supporting trays containing small-weight meat products
